This stuff is not disposable.
The 10 plastic DVD cases I got with the The Garbo Signature Collection might be immortal for all I know. In any case, they constitute a big impervious-looking pile of junk that can’t stay in the little 960 squre-foot beach house. The city recycling won’t take them, but I can’t feel good about putting them in the landfill. So I’m sending them to GreenDisk, where they’ll be refurbished for reuse.
I’m also sending them my old phones — oh, that purple-plated Nokia stick brings me back to those dot-com boomtown days! GreenDisk degausses data-carrying techno junk and sends you a certificate of destruction. (Important for privacy and intellectual property reasons.)
Other reasons to like these guys: If they can, they’ll give the device new life, if not, “Material that has no further operating life is broken down to its smallest components (metals, plastics, etc.) and used in the manufacturing of new products. Unlike some recycling companies, all of the material that GreenDisk collects is reused or recycled. No hazardous materials or obsolete components go overseas to be processed or disposed of.” Learn more about the problem of dumping overseas.
