A note from the road
Okay, dragging my ass home from Fluklahoma — as slow as the Greyhound local, stopping at every little bumfuck town from here to Wellville. I got a euro-postcard from M&M. Yeah, got to keep in touch. So here’s a little news from the road back to Normal (wherever the hell that is).
Listening to: Amy Winehouse. That’s right, I am shamelessly on the band wagon. Because to a New Orleans girl raised on Irma Thomas this just sounds soooo goood. Join me, listen to some right now at amywinehouse.com. Next up: Sharon Jones. Love those bass sax front girls. The perfect soundtrack for my cranky mood.
Pissed-off about: The Senate today backed administration spying on American citizens and granted telcos immunity [read about the issue in this previous post]. Now it goes to conference, where they will all agree that the 4th amendment now only applies when it is convenient — like the Geneva Conventions. BTW: Barack voted no,no,no .. Hills didn’t show. sigh.
Working on: Wrapping up the corporate image for Artisan Electric. Don’t you think Mike needs a T-shirt?
Re-reading: How Proust Can Change Your Life (Not a Novel) by the master of charming philosophy for the masses, Alain de Botton — a wry and pragmatic sort of self-help book skillfully sewn together from bits and pieces of Proust biography and writing. De Botton brings us the Proustian answers to the musical questions: “How to Love Life Today,” “How to Read for Yourself,” “How to Suffer Successfully,” “How to Open Your Eyes,” and “How to Express Your Emotions” and more. It’s 200 quickly-read pages, while Proust’s masterwork In Search of Lost Time is more than 4000 — so I’ll just be sticking to de Botton’s Cliffs Notes for now, taking his word for it that the answers are there in the original, wrapped in an excelsior of Proust’s famously long sentences.
Future posts: Claudio Carvalho — the Jedi-master trainer from the days of Golden Past Kate — called me the other day. Needs some web consulting, so I’m going to see him today at 3 p.m. (Even though I keep telliing myself don’t do client work for a living anymore. Claudio is special.) Haven’t seen him for seven years. Just goes to show, you never know what will happen when you start writing about Golden Past Kate.

Ah, I love the smell of optimism in the morning!

Kaye, it’s so cool to get a fresh NiteNote roundup post. Business, politics, literature, exercise and music … show me a morning paper with this much interesting stuff on the cover and I’ll show you the one that isn’t about to fold.
I’ve been resisting the Amy Winehouse train, but if you’re sold I may give her a try. I actually liked her wasted f-you performance on the Grammies the other night. Very rock and roll.
kate says:
Mr. Man, I’m so glad you’re home.
