It’s springtime. My perenials just started to show some green this week but right now they are under 10 inches (!) of snow. My front door opens to a walking court (not a street) that has plenty of grass and trees. My house is connected to the one behind it and just 20 inches from the one beside it but I have a large grassy side yard. Each year I make the gardens in the yard larger. My goal: no grass in five years. Once the snow is gone, it will be time to start my expansion for the year.

wow, what a beauty, I planted a grape vine last year, but it didn’t like my garden I guess, it did nothing. the azaleas did well as did the fig trees, so now I am looking at more fruit trees.
Val says:
Freda, did it grow at all, put out any vines from the stem? If so, it’s likely doing OK — it will take 2 or 3 seasons before it starts to bear fruit.

Janice — that sounds great. I love growing stuff to eat, After taxes I’m going to put in our herb, pepper and tomato plants for the year. Things are pretty tight on our lot with small beds running along one side and some around the front and back patios. The vine casts a deep shade when it really gets going, so it limits our plantings, but we do pretty well. Laurie is the one with the super garden — we call it “the back 40″– where she has created these terrific raised beds and even had her own worm ranch to create great, organically enhanced soil. Last year she didn’t even plant anything and got a big harvest of tomatoes and mirlitons that had seeded themselves frowm the previous year! I’m egging her on for this year, but it is a lot of work. So we will have to see.
Freda — hang in with that Vine. Val is right ours was timid the first couple of years. But look at it now!

thanks for the encouragement, I hope you are right. It did put out a couple of feelers, but they seemed to shrivel up.
I will go check to see if it is still there, I had given it up. I love to be able to go out the back yard and eat off my own trees.

Around these parts, frost sensitive plants go out after Derby, first saturday in may, but then they think derby is pretty special. Every so often they actually compare it to Carnival, but there is no comparison. As I tell them, you go to Derby, carnival comes to you.

Weee!!! I have finally shocked this machine into life after some weeks being unplugged from the 3rd Rock since our last big electric storm. After reading all of the extended family comments on garden goodies, I just had to send a note wishing all a wonderful spring! I have also been husbanding old and new plants and as Kate knows, I let all else melt away in my spring madness in the garden….I have purchased a lemon and a lime tree! Yeah!! And the entrance arbour of roses (white and yellow) are receiving smiles and “wow, looks great!” calls from passing drivers..Today i have planted two thunbergia vines “Grandaflora Blue” next to the brugeoning roses, so the arbour entrance will be as it was last year. I have been trying to cut the MILLIONS of new bamboo shoots…….each year there is the Month of The Culling….. some shafts are about 2 in. plus in diam. which will some day tilt this old house, but if cut early, i can use a small clipper instead of a gaint one. The back yard has deep red roses, basil, greek oreg. parsley and various plantlets in the kitchen garden which is four, four x four gardens with tiny brick walkways around them and a much loved birdbath sitting in the middle (this year i have planted tomotoes, green and red peppers in pots near the faucet for easy watering and, Kate, last year’s ‘fig stick’ has popped out with big green leaves saying, ‘I will be a tree!’ …but it is only 3 feet high. I will try to send photos. Freda and Janice, i would really love seeing photos of your gardens….and does anyone grow Moonflowers?
